Welcome to another “Tips Tuesday” (formerly known as “Tech Tuesday”). I decided to broaden Tuesdays to have a wide variety of tips and hacks beyond just technology. Today I want to tackle the 5 essentials for a more productive home office. I’ve worked from home for the past several years and come to realize you have to be intentional about being productive. When you work at home, other things can easily become distractions. Laundry, dishes and other chores start demanding my attention and suddenly my nine-to-five takes a backseat.
When we moved into our current home this fall, the office was the first thing I set up. I wanted it to be minimalistic and offer the best chance of being a productive workspace. Through this process, I discovered a few things that helped me be the most productive.
I’ve actually been using this since I started working from home. It is a life-saver for me! Each week I can determine how to best designate my work day. Each day of the week has its own list to tackle. The benefit with this is that all your to-dos literally stay at your fingertips. It’s easy to remember the important tasks and helps me stay on task at the same time.
I also like to see my schedule at a broader range. Thus, this desk pad does the same as the mousepad, only you can see the whole month ahead. This helps me see what I should be gearing up for in the coming weeks and also helps me track special events like birthdays and anniversaries. That is so important when I’m planning gifts for such events.
It helps to focus when you’re in a comfortable atmosphere. Whether we realize it or not, smells have a lot to do with that! This one also changes color or you can set it on the color of your choice. I personally use the SpaRoom Signature Blends Sensory Pack, Citrus Blossom when I’m working. The pack also includes a soothe and tranquil blend that I love! It really does awaken every sense and makes me feel like being in my office. It also keeps me centered at some of the stressful points of the day.
Another comfort comes from sound. When I’m trying to focus, I like to play some lively instrumental music. When I’m doing a mind-numbing task, I like playing some of my favorite music with lyrics. I use Spotify quite a bit for this purpose. This Bluetooth speaker has great sound and fills the room well.
When it comes to keeping track of paperwork, this is my lifeline. Each pocket represents a different category for me (ie: blog, billing, personal). I go through this folder several times a week to see what paperwork needs my attention. This also works well for bills and records.
All these things help keep me focused and on-task in my home office. They keep all the important things at the forefront of my memory while also providing a comfortable atmosphere to get things done.
What about you? What are some of the things that keep you on-task?
