Welcome to another “Tips Tuesday” (formerly known as “Tech Tuesday”). I decided to broaden Tuesdays to have a wide variety of tips and hacks beyond just technology. Today I want to tackle the 5 essentials for a more productive home office. I’ve worked from home for the past several years and come to realize you have to be intentional about being productive. When you work at home, other things can easily become distractions. Laundry, dishes and other chores start demanding my attention and suddenly my nine-to-five takes a backseat.

When we moved into our current home this fall, the office was the first thing I set up. I wanted it to be minimalistic and offer the best chance of being a productive workspace. Through this process, I discovered a few things that helped me be the most productive.

1.) Knock Knock 5 Days a Week Paper Mousepad

I’ve actually been using this since I started working from home. It is a life-saver for me! Each week I can determine how to best designate my work day. Each day of the week has its own list to tackle. The benefit with this is that all your to-dos literally stay at your fingertips. It’s easy to remember the important tasks and helps me stay on task at the same time.

2.) NPW We Live Like This Desktop Planner

I also like to see my schedule at a broader range. Thus, this desk pad does the same as the mousepad, only you can see the whole month ahead. This helps me see what I should be gearing up for in the coming weeks and also helps me track special events like birthdays and anniversaries. That is so important when I’m planning gifts for such events.

3.) Ellia, Ultrasonic Essential Oil Aromatherapy Diffuser

It helps to focus when you’re in a comfortable atmosphere. Whether we realize it or not, smells have a lot to do with that! This one also changes color or you can set it on the color of your choice. I personally use the SpaRoom Signature Blends Sensory Pack, Citrus Blossom when I’m working. The pack also includes a soothe and tranquil blend that I love! It really does awaken every sense and makes me feel like being in my office. It also keeps me centered at some of the stressful points of the day.

4.) iLive Portable Bluetooth Speaker

Another comfort comes from sound. When I’m trying to focus, I like to play some lively instrumental music. When I’m doing a mind-numbing task, I like playing some of my favorite music with lyrics. I use Spotify quite a bit for this purpose. This Bluetooth speaker has great sound and fills the room well.

5.) Smead 24 Pocket Poly Project Organizer

When it comes to keeping track of paperwork, this is my lifeline. Each pocket represents a different category for me (ie: blog, billing, personal). I go through this folder several times a week to see what paperwork needs my attention. This also works well for bills and records.

All these things help keep me focused and on-task in my home office. They keep all the important things at the forefront of my memory while also providing a comfortable atmosphere to get things done.

What about you? What are some of the things that keep you on-task?

  • I have a weekly planner very similar to yours that totally revolutionized my productivity (and whole life really!). But I never thought about finding a monthly planner that could serve a similar, broader purpose. Ordering #2 immediately to give it a try!

  • I’ve got that project planner type of a notebook for my school stuff – or I used to have, when I was in school. It’s super useful if you don’t want to have a separate notebook for each subject. I also had one for wedding planning 🙂

  • Oh, how I miss having a home office – I currently work on the dining table and I have to clear it every night for my own piece of mind. I love all your organising tools and desk accessories – can’t wait to have my own desk again at some point!

  • I absolutely love my desktop calendar!! It helps keep me in line during the week when I can see it in front of me! The organizer if perfect also for EVERYTHING!! I was so tired of misplacing my paperwork and decided to get one of these… I don’t know how i lived without it for so long….

  • My journal and my notebooks are my essentials for every day. I also love candles, especially when the weather is not so good and I need bright light around me. Great suggestions Kari. I am thinking of having a diffuser also.

  • Great tips and methods, I love that mousepad idea! At the moment my office is kind of on the go most of the time so I don’t want to carry any mouse pads or notebooks. For me all the notes stay in Apple Notes -app that makes it possible to have in my phone and both computers simultaneously. I also use the same app for drafting content for my posts. Additionally, I have a note that includes my blog plans for entire year. Moreover, I use calendar app for notifications about when content is published and when I’ve planned to do things like photoshoot or check emails. I would kind of love those handwritten memos but the moment it’s just not possible for me. Anyhow, it’s great that you have found the way that works for you! 🙂

  • I can’t wait to move and have my own office space I’ll be more likely to be productive since at the moment I’m working in my living room with a 4 month old D=
