Happy “Foodie Friday” everyone! Instead of a recipe, I decided to dig back in my memory bank and highlight one of my favorite restaurants from my travels. In fact, I wanted to start a Foodie Friday Travel Series! I love going new places and trying new things. Even more than that, I love suggesting great places to friends. So, if you are in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina or are planning to go, make sure you put Art Burger Sushi Bar on your list of places to try! It’s a burger and sushi fusion restaurant which was a huge pull for D and I last summer. Such a pull, in fact, that I rank it the best restaurant in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina!
Last May, D and I decided to minimize to fund a vacation. We sold things we didn’t need any longer and pulled in $1000! So, we used that money to go stay for a week in Myrtle Beach. This was our second time in Myrtle Beach and we made a point to eat in different places than the first time. While walking down the boardwalk, we stumbled upon Art Burger. We were intrigued by the idea of a burger and sushi fusion place. My husband loves burgers and I love sushi, so this was a no-brainer for us. We enjoyed it so much, we visited a total of 3 times before our vacation was over!
My favorite dish was the Fried Chicken Roll. This thing was unreal and not really even sushi. It was a roll with Fried Chicken, Macaroni and BBQ Sauce. I was sold on my first bite and we ended up getting this all 3 times we visited (in addition to other things). You wouldn’t think that those 3 ingredients would combine so incredibly well, but they did. There was absolutely no way to eat this thing with chopsticks, so we just used a fork. It was definitely outside-the-box which was something they were proud of.
For another visit, I decided to try a spin on their Burger Roll and built my own. I did hamburger, pickles, avocado and spicy mayo. While I can’t say my own Outside-The-Box creation beat the Fried Chicken Roll, I can say it was incredibly good. I’m also a sucker for spicy mayo on just about everything and often asked for a side of it to dip various things in.
The first visit, I was feeling more like having a traditional sushi experience, so I got the shrimp tempura roll. It was great (also including spicy mayo). However, if you’re wanting a unique experience, about anything else on the menu would probably wow you more. Had it not been for D ordering the Fried Chicken Roll that first time, I wouldn’t have known how great this place really was just based off a simple shrimp tempura roll.
D went with burgers the last 2 times we visited. He first tried the Art Burger. The next time he tried the Rembrandt. I was particularly impressed by the Rembrandt because it was seared in duck fat and topped with confit mushrooms. That sounds like art to me! They also looked like art complete with their own branding! D couldn’t really pick a favorite thing because he thought it was all really good. We ended up sharing our dishes every time so we could try as many things as possible. That 3rd visit, we ended up splitting 3 dishes total because we couldn’t give up having the Fried Chicken Roll again.
While neither of us drink alcohol, we did watch their liquid nitrogen concoctions. Once the bartender saw we were watching, he really pulled out the stops to give us a good show. In the restaurant itself, you can take in various pieces of art hanging on the walls or enjoy the outdoor patio overlooking the boardwalk and the beach. We sat inside the restaurant the first time, but opted to sit on the patio the last two times since we really can’t get enough of the beach.
Their menus looked like artist paint palettes which was a nice touch to nod to their theme. Everything about it catered to our desire for something different. In all, not only would we go back again when in Myrtle Beach, but I would want to send every friend there to do the same. It was so incredibly unique and the food was fantastic. I would give this place 5 stars any day!
